Maslow laid it out in his hierarchy pyramid. Maybe you learned about it in 10th grade social sciences. Maybe you nodded off during that lesson because you were at a late show the night before. Maybe a few of your favorite bands had played in some nearby city and there was no way you were gonna miss that. Right above that is the need for belonging.
Frank Turner and The Gaslight Anthem also present quality interpretations, as do The Bouncing Souls, Teenage Bottlerocket and many additional artists on this compilation. In short, the album very much succeeds in honoring Sly’s memory.
I was more than glad to relive those days, aided by the guarantee that I would see all my favorite songs performed live. As long as it is Art singing and playing his songs, fans are going to be happy, as they were on Wednesday night. You might actually be crazy for leaving Nehalem It was not a perfect performance, with the band often dragging through some of the slower parts, and Art tending to give off a frustrated vibe when the crowd failed to remember all the lyrics for sing-along portions.
There were many who questioned what kind of reaction Art would receive in his hometown show, since there was a significant subset that never accepted Everclear as a true Portland band. It was an uncertainty that even Art acknowledged early in the night, but the Wonder Ballroom was packed with fans who showed their love for the band with great volume throughout the show. The snide hipsters were unable to get a ticket to the sold-out show, and the night was the better for it.
There was a confidence to their performance that was admirable, as they often acted as if the crowd had paid their tickets to see them instead of the headliner though this is not to say that they dismissed the presence of Everclear, when in fact it was quite the opposite. Their style did not quite align with my preferences, though they never bored me.

Asian Man Records — Release Date: While not sounding particularly similar to the aforementioned groups, this project is likely to be eagerly received by fans of heartfelt, melodic indie rock. It includes a driving rhythm and dual vocals, and recalls a past relationship in hopes of making sense of what dissolved. It talks of missing an old friend when in unfamiliar surroundings and a desire to let that person know you still care.

I heard a lot of people talk about the Roxy but I never went but although not well documented, soul boys in London were the precursor to punk. I had caught a bit of the fever before I left and it tasted fresh. Prior to this I thought there was no point in doing music as a career choice as I thought it had all been done, how were you going to top the Stones and the Zep or the Beatles, Marley, Heatwave? Alex was my old school mate and moved in fresh from Croyden art school.
He left school a year before and had caught the first wave of punk, going to the Roxy and had even been photographed there and was in a Sunday Times supplement spread on it! Punk taught us the future had only just begun. Alex and me started going to lots of gigs. We would take speed, blues up to 4 or 5, sometimes more and pints of snakebite and we would walk all over London to gigs getting free entry at the Camden music machine and see a few bands on every night at the Marquee or the Nashville, and even Croydon Greyhound.

After a whirlwind initial phase of writing, recording, and touring at a frenetic clip, their newest document marks a period of rela- tive patience; a refocus- ing and a push toward a new democratization of both process and musi- cal surface. From the out- set, the new ensemble moved naturally toward a changed working method, as they learned how to listen to each other and trust in this new format.
The songwrit- ing process was consciously relocated to the practice space, where for several months, the band spent hours a day freely improvising, while recording as much of the activity as they could manage. Previously, Wand songs had generally been brought to the group setting substan- tially formed by singer and guitarist Cory Hanson; now seedling songs were harvested from a growing cloudbank of archived material, then fleshed out and negotiated collectively as the band shifted rhythmically between the permissive space of jamming and the obsessive space of critique.
This new process demanded more honest communi- cation, more vulnerability, better boundaries, more mercy and persistence during a year that meanwhile delivered a heaping serving of romantic, familial and political heart- break for everyone involved. They learned more about their instruments and their perceived limitations. Much else fell apart in their personal lives, in their bodies, and the bodies of those near to them.
And meanwhile all the shifting weather, the wireless signals, the helicopters overhead. Weird orange softened, darkened delicately, and rouged itself to a Plum.

And there was enough of that lost generation with more than a million youth unemployed under the Thatcher regime. No present, no future, no voice, no hope. Just like me, your enjoyment of these albums will come if you enjoy classicist pop and rock structure ; done largely by one man with a studio and the appreciation for simple gestures. Also just like me, you’ll rank each release based on which of your moods dominates your definition of “self”.
I’m not just wasting words, I think it’s important to point out before I make a blanket statement like “Tomorrow Morning is not as good as End Times”. Because that’s not true in any sense other than I relate more to the wallowing, blurry-eyed sad sack on End Times more than this new guy with the praise in his heart over the girl with the bearded-man tattoo. The music on Tomorrow Morning is still very good.

Twitter Friday afternoon, Monkey See blogger Linda Holmes wrote a post titled “Five Minutes of Unadulterated Joy,” with a link to a YouTube clip in which a wedding processional turns into a fabulous dance party. I can’t quite put my finger on why the video is as wonderful as it is — it’s more moving than it is funny, for some reason, even though it’s going for laughs — and Linda’s headline reminded me of another joy-inducing five-minute video I’d seen recently, this one featuring the New Jersey band The Gaslight Anthem.
I’ve spent a good chunk of this summer kicking myself for discovering The Gaslight Anthem nearly a full year after its tremendous album The ’59 Sound came out. The group channels the best attributes of its most obvious influence, Bruce Springsteen — the yearning, the majesty, the promise and pitfalls of youth — in a way that’s massively catchy and genuinely inspirational.
Well, others were way ahead of me, fandom-wise, so The Gaslight Anthem was booked to perform at the Glastonbury Festival earlier this summer. Which, in turn, gave the band a chance to perform its signature song, “The ’59 Sound,” with Springsteen himself popping up on stage to sing backup and play rhythm guitar.
Quite a great deal of press – too much, really – has been given to the similarities between New Jersey’s Gaslight Anthem and that other guy from the Garden State – Jon Bon J er, Bruce Springsteen.
First of all the Leatherface b-side collection link is fixed with a dl link including all the material, and I fixed the broken links to the Bayonettes discography and Weakerthans b-sides collection as well. It also appeared I left a song or two off of the Weakerthans collection that I intended to put on but I guess couldn’t find a good quality source for them at the time so I’ve included them in the re-up. I also removed several old posts from the archive from the very beginning of the blog before Pants started helping me and before I had figured out exactly what I wanted to do with the blog.
I’ll probably be re-posting some of the content again in a more uniform format. In Weakerthans related ish I was going to post a Weakerthans bootleg that a friend of mine recorded from a set they played this year in the basement of a record shop that sounds amazing BUT my copy of the recording was full of skips so I couldn’t. Hopefully, I’ll be able to visit him in the next month or so and get a new copy made to share with you fine people.

From my review — This music dances on the fences of folk, indie pop, Americana , gospel, and rock all at the same time. There are moments when the vocals remind me of the band fun. This is the kind of record that is going to sound just as fresh in 20 years as it does today. He is quite honestly the best thing to come along in the genre since the glory days of Cheap Trick.

This summer they’re busy headlining tours in the US, as well as playing a handful of festivals. Rob Inderrieden had the chance to sit down with drummer Benny Horrowitz at the Southside Festival in Southern Germany and talk about the whirlwind that has been their career, what he simply can’t live without and what fans can expect from them in the future. Festivals are always funny. Today was a good one. Lot of kids watching us. A lot of kids seemed to know it.
I was pretty excited about today. Even with the rain and horrible weather – fantastic set. I mean total fucking tool bags.
